S.O.S.Helping those in needDomestic Violence is sadly a real fact in our society. People are hurting people and we don’t always know about it. Or we do and don’t know how to respond. We as the church are responsible for making sure we do all we can to meet this need.
S.O.S. is one group in our area that is there to help. They have regular meetings for those needing support and help, they also offer advice and guidance for those needing legal help.
If you or someone you know needs help, they can call Teresa Oliver at 785-828-4357 or toll free 24 hours a day 800-825-1295. Our Pastor and Pastoral Care Director are also available to help as much as possible. Let’s be a blessing to those in need!
2017 Law Updates for Domestic BatteryThe Kansas Legislature significantly amended the domestic battery statute that become effective July 1, 2017. The amended statute will expand protection under the statute to “a person with whom the offender is involved or has been involved in a dating relationship.” The definition for a “dating relationship” is: a “social relationship of a romantic nature.” In addition to any other factors the court deems relevant, “the trier of fact may consider the following when making a determination of whether a relationship exists or existed: Nature of the relationship, length of time the relationship existed, frequency of interaction between the parties, and time since the termination of the relationship, when done in a rude, insulting or angry manner.”
The court held that municipal convictions for misdemeanor domestic makes it unlawful for an individual to possess a firearm after being convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence crime “under Federal, State, or Tribal law.”
